The ORGANIZATION: PLAY SOCCER TRENTON is a 501 C 3 not-for-profit organization that operates, without employees, under a local volunteer Board of Directors. The Board carries out all management duties, including the fiduciary responsibilities of the Board, which helps to keep costs low, minimizes administrative expenses, and ensures that maximum funding directly supports program participants and activity. The organization relies heavily on volunteerism, community engagement and collaborations with, for example, the District schools, the Trenton Department of Recreation, and Mercer County as well as with individuals and other organizations.

Our HISTORY and LEGACY: PLAY SOCCER TRENTON began in 2015 as a program originally offered by Play Soccer Nonprofit International which was a 501 C 3 incorporated in 1999 and also recognized by the United Nations. PLAY SOCCER TRENTON became an independent nonprofit 501 C 3 organization with its own local volunteer Board of Directors in August 2025 and is registered as a charitable organization in the State of New Jersey.

Why Soccer?

Soccer is the world’s most popular sport — and in Trenton, a city shaped by a rich immigrant heritage, it’s deeply loved and widely played. The game requires little equipment, but when paired with quality coaching and supportive environments, soccer becomes a powerful driver of:

  • Cardiovascular health

  • Muscle and bone development

  • Reduced risk of chronic disease

  • Improved mental health and resilience

  • Beyond physical benefits, soccer builds teamwork, inclusion, discipline, and belonging — qualities that strengthen individuals, families, and entire communities.

Long term benefits occur from the prevention of chronic disease, violence and substance abuse The sport can be broadly helpful in improving public health, and with its team effort, in improving social cohesion and inclusion, in education and literacy. Prevention reduces demand on public and personal budgets for expensive medical and social services and improves economic activity and productivity. Resilience can be nurtured after trauma and difficult life circumstances to help build healthier futures. Ideally, the benefits of playing soccer are life-long, and are shared across generations and throughout community engagement
